Set in two iconic locales - Hollywood's legendary Chateau Marmont and Fresno's amazing Forestiere's Underground Garden - Waiting for Lipchitz at Chateau Marmont is a bold and colorful critique of the California Dream through the perspective of a screenwriter who has gone from riches to rags.

A kind of Hollywood version of Waiting for Godot, Janigian's Lipchitz is a stunningly original take on the absent protagonist and what is illuminated in the void.

Waiting for Lipchitz at Chateau Marmont A Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Aris Janigian Jack Nolan Rare Bird Audio Books

I have never written a review before, but this is a special book.
It is brilliant throughout. It is at times, Faulknerian...at times, a screed reminiscent of Howl. It’s probably the best novel ever written about Los Angeles, and for sure better than Nathanial West’s The Day of the Locust. It is unique and original and I think it has created a new genre. I was intrigued from the first word to the last and read it in one sitting.

Waiting for Lipchitz at Chateau Marmont A Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Aris Janigian Jack Nolan Rare Bird Audio Books Reviews

I loved your book. From a scathing and deeply insightful look into the emptiness of the soul of LA, to excellent, laugh out loud jokes and an engaging, deeply layered prose, I really felt one with your almost soul-screaming love-hate affair with LA. Hard to look at people in LA the same again, as if the dirt on the sidewalk, the black stain from riding the subway with your hand on the railing, is the collective soul of the people, decaying into the landscape. Lots of social commentary I totally agree with; lots of insights I suspected but never could really know. All in all, a wonderful book that shares with you its guilt, its nervousness, its fears and its real, genuine beliefs.
If the Marquis de Sade wrote a book about L.A. It would be Waiting for Lipchitz.

Janigian turns the key, releases the handbrake and your mind plummets into the cold descent into hell; Southern California, the so called bastion of creativity. Janigian’s words drill a hole in your skull, your third eye opens and everything suddenly becomes clear.

Never mind about 5.1 surround sound, 4k TV and virtual reality glasses, Waiting for Lipchitz tears a new hole in the fabric of reality.

The real hero of the story is John Hirschmann, best friend of the narrator. A novelist who leaves L.A. for the rich soil and fresh produce of Fresno California, the real promised land. In the central valley Hirschmann finds the peace and an inner calm he was looking for that was missing in L.A.

The narrator follows Hirschmann’s path only to be sucked back into the air-conditioned hell hole of L.A. when Lipchitz sends him a text about meeting him at the Chateau Marmont.

Torn between L.A. and Fresno, the narrator takes the reader on a ride of biblical proportions.

Reading about Fresno brought a feeling of calmness, reading about L.A. tore my psyche apart.

Waiting for Lipchitz is an incredible travel guide, documenting heaven (Fresno) and hell. No one has torn apart the movie industry as accurately Janigian.

All of us wish that we can be as bold and determined like Hirschmann to move to the peace and quiet of the Central Valley and leave behind the narcissistic media obsessed cesspool of Southern California.

Thank you for opening my mind.
Waiting for Lipschitz at the Chateau Marmont is a brilliant, extremely funny, and acerbic novel by one of the great young novelists in our country today. In this, his fourth novel, Aris Janigian has produced an intense and compelling work that I could not put down. The narrator is a once popular screenwriter down on his luck who, while waiting at this classic Hollywood hotel famed for its seductions and deal for a producer who he hopes will turn around his career, spends his time reminiscing about his glory days and raging against not just the depraved money culture of Hollywood, but that of Los Angeles, all of Southern California, and indeed, modern American urban life. There are hints here of Dostoyevsky’s underground man, but I read this work as close in feeling to the powerful rants of the late, great Austrian novelist Thomas Bernhard, save for the fact that unlike Bernhard, Janigian is not afraid of displaying a tender and romantic side, a love for the land and the joys of a natural world that stands in opposition to much of contemporary life. The author’s descriptions of the amazing variety, shapes, and colors of the fruits of vegetables of San Joaquin Valley will make you want to rush off to Fresno to sample their delights. I’m packing my bags right now!
Never got too excited about what I was reading. Let it got about 1/3 of the way in.
Too cerebral
Loved this book!
